Carsten is Professor in Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He was elected Fellow of Trinity College Dublin (2013) and the International Society for Aerosols in Medicine (2025). Carsten’s research studies the disposition and transport of drugs following their administration to the lungs using pre-clinical in vitro and ex vivo models. Moreover, he is interested in molecular origins of airways disease. Carsten has edited 1 book and (co-) authored 118 peer-reviewed publications. He serves as Associate Editor of Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery and Section Editor of European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, as well as on the editorial advisory boards of European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Research. Carsten also is a member of the inhalation-based Biopharmaceutics Classification System (iBCS) initiative.
